Aburn Plainsman Park Upgrades

Auburn Athletics recently completed plans for an estimated $25 million Plainsman Park renovation project with the initial phases already under construction.  The renovations are highlighted by the additions of three new premium experiences – the Hall of Fame Club, First Base Club, and Home Plate Club – as well as a unique general admission terrace with a view from Green Monster Wall in left field. The multi-phased projects will also enhance the fan experience by adding more socially inviting concourse and club-level spaces. Additionally, new and improved team spaces such as the Tim Hudson Locker Room and the relocated modernized press area.

    • Location:  Auburn University, Auburn, AL
    • Project Size:  35,000 SF
    • Cost:  $25,000,000
    • Facility Type: Higher Education / Sports & Recreation
    • Owner: Auburn University
    • Services:  Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Protection and Telecommunications Engineering

The First Base Club is a three-story addition phased after the Hall of Fame Club that provides a main cooking kitchen on the field level, indoor concessions and concessions cooking on the concourse level, and premium indoor gathering space for patrons plus support for gameday operations and press on the club level.  The First Base Club area includes the reconfiguration and upgrade to the existing field-level concession area and restrooms.  The improvements to the existing structure and canopy of the first base area will provide the facility with a new modernized appearance.  A new concession area will provide the first base concourse level and an open area club space with improved food selections, amenities and services. A new preparation kitchen allows for the preparation and sale of the new menu in the immediate area.  The electrical distribution and support for the First Base Club will be a 480 volt distribution system that is fed from the stadium’s existing service switchboard.  A new distributed lighting controls system with LED and dimmable lighting , fire alarm, telecommunications, and audio/visial systems as well as upgraded fire protection and mechanical systems are provided in all of the renovated spaces.  This facility is heated and cooled by central campus hot water and chilled water systems, with tertiary variable-speed pumps located in a new mechanical room on field level.  Multiple high-efficiency air handling units provide conditioned air for control of temperature, humidity, ventilation, and building pressurization.  Kitchen ventilation systems utilize multiple fans, hoods, and electronic controls to meet cooking needs.  Careful coordination among trades maximized usable floor space to meet the project’s programming needs while providing sufficient maintenance access and energy efficiency for a sustainable building.  New HVAC controls are integrated with Auburn’s campus building automation system.

The War Eagle Terrace is an open deck area for fan access and participation from the left field area above the Green Monster Wall.  The electrical design will use spare capacity in the existing 480V panelboard located south of the terrace.  The terrace level design will include LED lighting in a new layout.  New receptacles will be included for TVs.  The War Eagle Terrace design will also include a full telecommunications buildout with infrastructure for modernized pitching, tracking, and teaching systems.  Fire alarm notification and signal devices and emergency egress lighting powered by an inverter will also be included.

The addition included three new premium experiences at the baseball home of Auburn University – Hall of Fame Club, First Base Club, and Home Plate Club are included. An existing weight room was renovated into the Hall of Fame Club to provide a new indoor gathering space, bar, and additional restrooms on the field level.  Due to project phasing and the location of existing utilities, the indoor area is conditioned by multiple variable-speed, packaged rooftop air conditioning units with temperature and humidity control.  Exhaust air is maintained by rooftop exhaust fans.  Rooftop equipment and associated controls are integrated with Auburn’s campus building automation system.  An outdoor space was constructed for the Hall of Fame Club and new seating behind home plate which is heated and ventilated by electric unit heaters and overhead fans.  A fire riser room was incorporated into this phase of construction to provide fire protection needs for the First Base Club. The electrical design includes a new distributed lighting control system with warm temperature, dimmable pendant lighting that transforms the indoor space into a speakeasy.  Weather-resistant receptacles with integral USB ports for device charging are provided in the drink rails and low wall of the renovated outdoor seating area.

The Home Plate Club renovated existing broadcast media and coaches booths on the upper level behind home plate into new broadcast media booths and premium club and bar space.  This area was initially heated and ventilated only but upgraded with modern HVAC systems as part of the project.  Due to the location of existing utilities and limited mechanical space, the Home Plate Club is conditioned by a high-efficiency variable refrigerant flow system that provides independent temperature control in each occupied space.  Dedicated exhaust fans provide ventilation for new restrooms.  Outdoor VRF equipment was installed on a lower roof below the Home Plate Club to minimize refrigerant piping and maintain necessary access to equipment.  The electrical design included new LED dimmable lighting that modernizes the club space and fire alarm, telecommunications, and audio/visual systems.  TVs and HVLS ceiling fans were included in the premium stadium seating area.
