Alabama Supercomputer Data Center
This 23,500 SF, two-story facility consists of office spaces with 5,500 SF of raised access floor data center and is a continuing effort to improve and expand performance of an ever-growing, critical data center serving the Alabama Research and Education Network (AREN). The facility was originally designed and constructed in 1987.
- Location: Huntsville, AL
- Project Size: 23,500 SF
- Facility Type: Government
- Owner: Alabama Supercomputer Authority
- Services: Electrical and Mechanical/ Plumbing Engineer
This project is a replacement of mechanical equipment that has exceeded industry accepted life expectancy for a critical data center serving the Alabama Research and Education Network (AREN).
Four direct expansion (DX) split systems, that serve offices and general areas, will be replaced in-kind, including air handling units and rooftop-mounted condensing units. The replacement units will be high efficiency, dual refrigerant circuit systems that maintain the current footprint and level of serviceability while improving efficiency and performance. Two additional, redundant, DX split system units serving an electrical equipment room will also be replaced. Due to the high sensible heat load of the electrical equipment, three new computer room DX split system units will be provided to meet the sensible heat requirements and provide redundancy (N+1) to prevent loss of cooling for critical electrical equipment.
Dell Consulting is working directly with the owner to meet the sensitive needs of the critical facility during design and construction to minimize impacts to facility operation. As Prime consultant, Dell Consulting directly interfaced with Alabama’s Department of Construction Management (DCM) to provide deliverables design review and approval.
