Among the Center’s major activities are the dissemination of forecasts and warnings to local and regional business and industry and the support of Alabama’s first and only undergraduate program in meteorology.
The center serves local businesses and industries 24 hours per day / 365 days per year. The center helps the Oil Companies & Utilities in assisting with storm preparation. The Weather Center provides Information and Service in Emergency Situations due to its rapidly changing environment and impressive array of weather events such as severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts and hurricanes.
Dell Consulting provided the Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Telecommunications design for the current space.
With a loss of power to the building, the function of the Weather Center is supported by a natural gas generator and operation is maintained without interruption.
The HVAC Systems are designed to operate normally on the campus chilled water systems. Upon loss of power to the building, heating and ventilation for the weather center is provided by a separate and dedicated direct expansion unit.
